It's funny how it's never just one thing.

In my region of the world a crackdown on street racing started a few years ago. It continued because each night the police stopped someone, there was at least one DUI and suspended license.

Unsurprisingly those who disregard traffic rules tend to equally disregard other rules.

I'm not a big "lock them up" guy but seriously people don't seem to understand how hard it is to actually get the state to put and keep you in jail. You have to do really really bad things multiple times. The US prison population has been falling for over a decade now and part of that is everybody now faces pressure to not use incarceration as a first (or second or fifth) option
reply
The USA has the biggest incarceration rate of any developed country.

If you say that it's hard to get the state to put you in jail, then the only way I can reconcile that with facts is that people in the USA commit crimes X10 times more than in other developed countries.

Do you think that's true?

reply
Oh absolutely. The level of antisocial behavior the US tolerates compared to multiple other countries (developed and developing) I've lived in is astounding.
reply
My country has a relatively high incarceration rate for a EU member, but that is in huge part due to previous governments seeing jail as a solution to everything.

Currently the prevailing notion is that prison is often just LinkedIn for criminals, so attempts at alternatives have been made - ankle monitors and the like.

I know a total of two people who were convicted - both for marijuana possession. One got a suspended sentence as the amount was small, the other did time, but looking at the case it was miscarriage of justice - partly because of a testimony of a man who met the accused just once in his life and had legal troubles of his own, from which he wanted to get out this way.

None of them really posed a threat to society that would mandate incarceration.

I was kind of hoping he sprinted out his back door which happened to be on a state line and then mailed his guns back to his house, just to try to cover everything.
reply
There is a strong bias towards stupid criminals getting caught.

> Given his former crimes, Sohaib should have had none of this.

Nobody should have a personal armory.

reply
Fortunately enough Americans have enough guns that no matter how much people like you whine about it you'll never be able to take them away.
reply
Yes, because if the American army went rogue I'm sure a bunch of untrained goons cosplaying as John Wick will be able to take them with some assault rifles and pistols. A very important freedom indeed.
reply
Afganistan caused the US plenty of problems with 70 year old bolt actions and at best 1 gun per 16 people and a tiny fraction of the population fighting. Claiming the US population couldn't successfully work as an insurgency against its military is naive, especially when they have direct access to US logistics and economy.
reply
Americans are getting executed on the streets, ran by corrupt pedophiles, and their taxes are being funneled to the rich in the open. Where's the insurgency?
reply
So is your problem with people having guns is they aren't reactionary enough or shooting at police or military yet? If that was happening im pretty sure most people right now would be screaming about terrorists shooting at cops and politicians more than they would be joining up with the insurgency.

Bullets flying is a last resort and you should be thankful for that, not bemoaning it.

reply
"We have the guns to keep the state in check but we won't actually do that because that's bad so instead lets keep shooting each other and show off our cool guns".

I am not advocating for an insurgency. I am pointing out that it won't happen because that's not why gun owners own guns. Despite the claims of noble ideals.

reply
Burglars take them away pretty often. Out of reported firearm thefts, most happened to those who had six or more such items.
reply
This seems like statistical bias in measurement, but it's also likely that enthusiasts would have both more count and more valuable items while also being more likely to show them off.
reply
Only commit one crime at a time
reply
There should be a law against committing multiple crimes at the same time.
