The threat is them implanting some sort of device that sniffs your password next time you type it. Then they come back at a later date for the password and unlock your gadget.

Assuming you are a high value target I’m sure you can open a laptop and put some kind of keylogger to track the keypresses.

For a laptop with full disk encryption, there is the possibility of the attacker tampering with the hardware.
