hmm... maybe a 'write lock' on the directory? though this will become more hairy without timeouts/etc...
replyTo the extent that locking exists in posix it is various degrees of useless and broken. And as far as I know while BSDs have extensions which make some use cases workable Linux is completely hopeless.
