Ironically (for my generation in the UK at least) "Asian" meant "South Asian" and for a long time we didn't have a useful shorthand for "all parts of Asia"

replyIt's an interesting evolution given that Asia as a term started out meaning just the westernmost tip of current-Asia, ie Western Anatolia.
replyWhen the term started out, There was nothing called United States (As a country or its current culture/s). And I am not sure if this happens outside the US anyway.
replySlight correction, people in NY refer to it as “The City” and people in NYC say the same, but specifically mean Manhattan.
