Not only the telescreens, but my impression of the world in 1984 is that the surveillance depended on an army of watchers at the opposite end. Today we have models of all kinds: classification models, speech to text models, large language models, etc. Surveillance with our devices is automated, no human army of watchers needed!

You need to up your irony. The proles were reading Orwell's 1984 and thought "hey, I shouldn't mind being spied on by (smart) TVs!" because this is the statistically average behavior of the consumers.
