There was a glitch that turned up in the compression logic in xerox copiers, that was occasionally changing digits in photocopied/faxed financial documents. Not just make them indistinct, but resolve to completely the wrong digit when decompressed for printing.

When that came out I wondered how many people have lost business or their jobs to accusations of wire fraud. Can to can’t is much in the same category. It changes the meaning profoundly.
