What's the `: tmp;` incantation for?
replySorry, that's my shell prompt. It's designed to be harmless if you accidentally copy and paste it — the opposite extreme from tcsh's default prompt of >.
replyBash does it only inside variable assignments:
reply a=123:~
echo $a
echo 123:~
123:/home/me
