I think one kind of issue with most sci-fi is they explained a world that was, but not near as much how it got there.

There was all kinds of science fiction that showed a world of robots and AI, but nothing about the transition. We have an idea what the future looks like, but not the path in between. If AI gets powerful, then there is some point where that power leaks out in a series of events. Would we expect it to look any different than it does now?
