This is kind of like Apple with the iPhone. You need 3 model products max. 3 is easily understood and people can be bothered (if they care) to track the difference. More than 3 is a mix of being redolent of ADHD (viz bad PR) while also being annoying for consumers to track the difference.
replyI can’t tell you the difference between the 10 different versions of the current iPhone and I can’t you the difference between the 5-6 different models put out by the Anthropics/OpenAIs of the world. At this point I just try to track the flagship and then the cheapest one or worst case I just use the flagship.
I’m sure internally there’s data showing people want choice and options but decision fatigue is of course very real.
Very fair. There's always a tradeoff in the number of products, and it's hard to make everyone happy. My suspicion is that the optimal number is probably a bit higher for developers on our API (who often build their own internal evals) than for individual users (who don't want to waste time re-optimizing every month). We're excited by Terra's uniquely fast computer use, but if it traction is poor, maybe we'll go back to 3. It all depends on the market signal - we only want to ship models people find uniquely useful.
