I take it means downhill. Not cross country which to me seems safe, apart from causing asthma in Norwegians for some reason... But downhill version involves going relatively fast or really fast with some small change for sudden stop, which in very few cases is safe.

The downhill version may involve going very fast, for the people who choose this (and who are thus likely to be involved in accidents).

People who do not like unnecessary risks can go downhill as slow as they choose. Skiing speed is controllable, unless you are an inexperienced beginner, in which case you should not attempt to go downhill where that is too steep.

Skiing becomes incredibly dangerous once you get into like…your 40s and beyond unless you have been doing it pretty consistently your whole life. And even then it’s still very dangerous. High speeds, downhill, crashes are serious.

It’s a sport many people step away from for long periods of time (I.e. the muscles aren’t in shape and they're rusty) and it demands a lot unless you’re sticking to bunny slopes.

ah okay, yea makes a lot of sense... I would add that motocross is probably also in that camp. Lots of people ride as kids, stop, and then start again later in life. Its a very dangerous sport with lots of significant hard falls.

But its also a lot of fun. Its crazy how much we crave excitement in life but that excitement often carries enormous risks.

Yeah I wouldn’t be caught dead trying to snowboard down a mountain anymore lol
